From The Heart: Phoebe Fever on how being different is your superpower

Hair and make-up artist, Phoebe Fever, shares how colour and sel-confidence are essential elements to finding your own unique look.

Phoebe Fever grew up hanging out at photoshoots with her fashion photographer father. “I would tag along with my Dad to his photography jobs where I was able to see first-hand how a team of professionals would come together to create and execute one beautiful vision. ”These early excursions convinced her that she wanted to become a hair and make-up artist. “I fell in love with the prospect of becoming a hair and make-up artist. I love connecting with people, creativity and working to enhance an individual’s unique features to bring out the most beautiful versions of themselves.”

Now represented by Jane Artist Management, Phoebe has worked across Australia and the world with brands such as Seafolly, JETS Australia, Dissh, Babyanything and Nagnata. “I love working closely with my clients to bring to life a brand brief. It’s important to me to bring a lot of trust and communication to the table.”

For her own hair and make-up, Pho ebe prefers a more natural, lived-in look. “I’m a natural girl through and through. I want my skin to look like skin, like I’ve spent the whole day at the beach, and my cheeks to look sunkissed, my lips to be juicy. ”But she doesn’t shy from colour when the mood calls for it. “The colours you use to express yourself are powerful, it helps you fulfil the character you want to portray. There’s nothing like putting on a smudged out red lip to feel that french-girl sexy look or a highlighter on your cheeks and lids to create a little angelic sparkle.”

For those wanting to experiment a bit more with their personal look, Phoebe’s advice is to start minimally and build from there. “If you are starting from the beginning in your hair and make-up journey, I would suggest really sit with yourself, take in your features and start with minimal product. A general rule of thumb is when you hone in on your natural colours and tones of your skin and hair,start using products a shade or two darker or lighter to enhance your uniqueness.”

“As for expressing yourself through make-up, I do believe there’s no right or wrong. No make-up, lots of make-up, natural colour, lots of colour, it’s all incredibly unique .... You just need to know that you as a person are enough, your make-up look doesn’t define you, it enhances you.”

As a mother, Phoebe is excited and inspired by the directi on that the industry is going in. “I’ve seen a big shift working in the industry, there was a real moment where everyone wanted to look the same and it was really disheartening. The fact that we are seeing so many people from such incredibly different back grounds, genders and belief systems fronting huge campaigns is like a breath of fresh air. It absolutely gives me hope as a mother to a young boy that he will have the opportunity to express himself through art, fashion, make-up, colour or however he creatively chooses.”

“I can only hope that the hair and make-up industry will continue its trajectory of acceptance and love for how beautiful each person is individually and opening space for more creatives to really show what they’re made of.”
